Croyde Surfers bring home the medals from 2010 English Nationals
The bank holiday weekend saw a large contingent of CSC members making the trek down to Cornwall to compete in the 2010 English Nationals. With a fresh North Westerly wind building throughout the weekend it was a challenging comp- surfable but random peaks made for some variable heats and it required all the guile and water knowledge of competitors, plus a dose of good fortune, to be able to pick off waves that offered more than a turn or two.
Standout performances from Zak Lawton in the Junior longboard saw him sweep to victory, with a gritty showing in the tricky final on day one. Harriet Knight entering her first longboard event made 4th in the womens. Other notable successes on the Saturday saw the majority of CSC competitors progress through the early rounds, with just Peony, Flora & Maisie dropping out of the u-18 girls, Alex Gibson bowing out of the u-14s and Beau Bromham unlucky not to progress in the u-18s.
Sunday was shortboard finals day and in the strengthening wind it was a battle with the elements. Credit to all who did so well against strong opposition. In the u-14s Taz Knight came close to his first ever national title, finishing second. In the u-18 girls Laura Crane put in a top performance to gain the runners up slot- a whisker away from victory again. Jemima & Harriet Knight took the third and fourth places… three from CSC in that Final!
Alex Baker kept the Croyde banner flying in the u-18 boys, taking the runners up position with most canny observers assessing that he had done enough to take the win…
The climax of the event saw Lyndon Wake and Stu Campbell taking 2nd and 4th in the Open… a great result against strong opposition; and in the Women’s Open Karma Worthington battled through to the third place slot which was a fantastic effort against a very competitive field. Lucy Campbell took the fourth place in the womens, punching above her weight in true Campbell style.
It’s a credit to the Club and the Local surfers who performed so well that such a strong showing was made on the national stage.. well done guys.
