Interclubs Runs in Storm Surf!

!!!!!!!!CROYDE WHITEWASH!!!!!

Strong winds coming from the Irish Sea made for challenging conditions on Saturday, when the Tiki sponsored BSA British National Interclubs was held at Croyde Bay. Contest hosts Croyde Surf Club had agonised over the decision to run the event with such a poor forecast. But in the end the call was made to go, on the basis that: “if we’re going to surf blown- out junk it might as well be big blown out- junk”

Thankfully the tents and marquees didn’t blow away, and with heavy rain squalls passing to the North and South, the surfers were left to cope with 20 minute paddle outs in the maelstrom of white water.

First up were the groms, with u-10, u-12 and u-14s in the water, bravely rising to the challenge. Despite a strong presence from Polzeath club Surfs UP and with teams from Wales and Woolacombe also vying for honours the Croyde locals took the win. Team captain, Alastair Deswert, lifting the Trophy in front of a large crowd of cheering supporters. Standout performances from Charlie Crane, Flora Lawton and Billy Ashford sealed the victory.

In the Ladies Division Croydes’ A and B teams were left to battle for honours un-opposed after no-shows from Cornwall and Wessex; with the A team emerging triumphant – Andrea Lawrence, Karma Worthington, and sisters Jemima and Harriet Knight in the medals. Surfed through Low tide the girls had some of the most challenging conditions to deal with and some epic rides were made through the chaotic shore dump.

With the tide pushing hard and overhead sets beginning to bowl randomly in the 20knot onshore gusts, the Open was run at a furious pace. Some heavy drops and numerous hilarious wipeouts were inevitable. Surfers returning to the contest site, visibly drained from the intensity of the paddle-out, reported jelly legs and arms. Occasionally a clean peak would present itself out back and some long rides and big turns were made.

After a close fought battle, local knowledge proved the clinching factor again. Standouts Alex Baker, Lyndon Wake, Ossian Pleasance, Nigel Cross, Charlie Charlesworth, and Matt Jenkins who took the highest combined wavescores of the day, sealed a Croyde whitewash in all categories.

The Interclubs is an event firmly grounded in the grassroots of surfing, with commercial and individual interests for once taking a back-seat- it’s a format that helps remind everyone why it is they surf; and brings clubs together to celebrate their shared love of the ocean. Croyde Surf Club, as this years champions, now get to host the event again next year- bring it on!

A big thank you to Matt and Ossian, Mrs Bromham, Saltrock and the local councils for making the trip possible, let's hope for some medals.

Analog contest goes off!

Actually, the conditions for the contest turned out fine. Not as good as it gets but solid 3-4 feet, with some barrels, can't really expect more than that. The final was fizzin, all surfers shredding, especially Reubyn Ash and local little fella Adam Thornton. Adam took it in the end, but only by the smallest of margins - his tail defying backhand ATTACK was buzzin everyone!

The results:

1st Adam Thornton (Prixford)
2nd Reubyn Ash (Bude)
3rd Matt Jenkins (Braunton)
4th Placket. (Westward Ho!).

Well done Cotty and associated crew, good contest, well called, solid waves mid summer, you were lucky!

Analog stand by contest alert

Just to let everyone know we're looking like there could be a high possibility of running the contest this sunday (sunday 26th)

There is a decent chart and it looks like we're gunna start getting pulses sunday afternoon the wind looks southerly but it could be quite light.

Low tide on Sunday is around 4pm, registration will be at 1pm with the plan of getting the first heat in the water by 1.40pm

I'll make the final call saturday afternoon so if it looks to windy or like its gunna be too small we'll call it off!

Anybody has any thoughts on this let me know and hope to see you on sunday

Croyde Take The Mighty North Devon Cup!

Matt
not a huge turn, but the conditions were shoddy and the commitment is admirable

Winners
Fine looking bunch of contenders, but check the evilness in Waxers eyes, imminent danger, i stand witness to that

Sand
Ramon flexing his farmers arms, Dan, losing control

But, come on, it aint saying much, the other 'contenders' were at half strength. The Ho! had a fairly solid team, but couldn't pull it together and was a shame that they couldn't come along and take part in the evening fun.

It looked like Saunton might be a danger, but they fell apart in the final. Woolacombe scratched back a bit, got 2nd, but, against such a solid group of Croyde surfers the other teams didn't have a chance - their moves were more solid, more complete and a lot smoother. Having judged the whole contest, i'd have to say that ossian did the best move, a solid top turn into slide, controlled, spray, judge fodder.

The girls had a good go, but against their male counterparts, it was difficult. However, they almost took the Croyde B team in the 1st round, too close.

Even though croyde A team flounced everyone, we hope it doesn't put the other teams off having a good go next time. I think all would admit that it was a success, well done Dan Newsome, good man, best of all was the night fun to be had post contest, characters were out in full bloom, wholesome...

  1. Croyde A
  2. Woolacombe A
  3. Croyde B
  4. Westward Ho!

A Team: Wayne Cowie, Scott Ranman, Matt Jenkins, Ossian Pleasance, Charlie Charleswiggle.

Croyde Surf Club's Beau Bromham Takes out Under 16 division of Gul Night Surf

First place in the U16 boys event went to Beau Bromham of Croyde with an excellent display of high class surfing, in waves which were unfortunately not as consistent as the previous day. Max tucker of Porthcawl made the most of the day and took a well deserved second place. Third place went to Luke Dillon at his home break and a very respectable forth went to Welsh surfer Tom Good.

2009 AL RANNOCHAN Memorial Surf Competition

The event was held in tricky cross shore 3 ft conditions with large tides at Downend, Croyde, it looked hard work. Lyndon Wake threw the biggest most committed turns, this is why he took 1st place. Ossian Pleasance 'walked in the park' and took 2nd. Charlie Charlesworth, contest animal, did what he does and got a solid 3rd, whilst Jinx shat the bed and got a 4th. Good turn out, good fun, special thanks and respect to Matt Saunders for stepping up as Head Judge, legend.

The juniors will compete for the AL-RAN JUNIOR on the 2nd of May, which is looking to be one of the biggest turn-outs in the clubs history.
