With the winter doing its best impression of party guest that will not take the hint and hit the road (i know the feeling), Croyde Surf Club (CSC) has decided to get proceedings underway.

The first contest of the year has been done and dusted with the ‘Al Ran Memorial’ being fought-out in empty 3-4ft semi-clean conditions. As with most Croyde contests the first round heats could have been a final on any given day, yet it was endurance  as well as ‘moves’ which played its part in a very enjoyable event. Thus, the surf had paddle-outs fitting for the new gladiator series, nevertheless with no-one-in, it was nice to see the likes of; Charlie, Ossain, and Eddy Night smashing the proverbial out of what was in front of them.

The 12 competitors were whittled down to 4; with Dan, Scott, Matt, and Charlie battling it out to take the bottle of Dr Jack home. In a final which wasn’t in keeping with the standard of the other heats Scott finally held his nerve too carve and slash his way too first place. Well done Scott; your Dad was a legend and you’ve finally done it.

After the presentation in the Mannor Inn the Annual General Meeting took place. The main theme was to elect a new Chairman as the previous chair; Matt Jenkins has stepped down after 5 years of hard work with Ossian Pleasants totally rebuilding the junior section of the club. The following positions were filled:

Chairman- Dan Newsome
Treasurer- Martin Purchase
Sectary – Sheila Campbell
Contest Director- Ossian Pleasence
Junior Captains- Beau Jack
Social Sectaries- Andrew Cotton/ Scott Ranhome

As the new chairman I wish to thank Matt Jenkins for the work he did during his time as Chairman. The future of Croyde surfing is in a lot better state through the dedication he has put in than when he found it. My hopes whilst being chairman is to build on this whilst re-igniting some of the best contest surfers and socialisers in the country. The Next event is the ‘Cheers Sunset tag team’ which as last year will be held on a Friday evening allowing most surfers off work or ‘her in doors’ for the evening. Good competition, Good people, Good times. The juniors are not forgotten as they have their own captains who are going too run WCT contests as well as parallel competitions alongside the open events.
