Tech savvy backpackers risk pricey luggage

According to recent research by AA travel insurance, gap year holidaymakers carry upwards of £1billion worth of valuables in their backpacks, that’s an average of £450 each.
This increasingly valuable baggage, which AA claim makes backpacker travel insurance more important than ever, is reckoned to be a side effect of young travellers increasing dependence on expensive gadgets to stay in touch with friends and family back home. Somewhat worryingly, given this increasingly valuable luggage it was reported that 52% of travellers would nonetheless happily “spend a night sleeping under the stars with no tent to protect their belongings.”

Whilst new technology like expensive mobile phones and laptops make it easier than ever to maintain contact however far your travels take you the increased risk involved in travelling with expensive electrical goods really shouldn’t be underestimated. Christian Young, head of AA travel insurance emphasised the importance of being properly covered: "With all these technological treasures in their bags it has never been more important for backpackers to ensure they are fully insured so that they can explore with peace of mind."

You can pick up Backpacker travel insurance for 6 months of worldwide travel from Go for just £140 including baggage.
