Should I Go Solo or With Other People?

Despite travelling often being an experience where you’re able to experience incredible freedom, there are still some constraints. Of course you’ll need to budget and it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to sustain your travels forever if you haven’t got any incoming money. There are also constraints caused by other people. You might be frightened or not confident to go it alone, but you’ll find that getting the timing right of when to go, and places of where you want to visit when you’re out there, may end up in uneasy compromises that don’t satisfy either party entirely. Travelling with friends certainly has its benefits too, but so does going solo. Check out this list of pros and cons to see what’s good and bad about travelling with friends or going solo:

Going Solo

Pros

  • It will help you to be independent and interact with more people.

  • Allows you more freedom on where you want to go and what you want to do on any given day.

  • Even if you’re shy, you’ll probably overcome this, and it could become an important life skill.

Cons

  • You may be less confident at meeting new people at first.

  • You won’t have so many people to support you if something goes wrong or you get lost.

  • Having to assert your independence more might not be a good thing for you.

Travelling with other people

Pros

  • You’ll always have someone to talk to.

  • You can share food and accommodation, which will probably save you money.

  • Someone will be there to take photos without taking your camera!

Cons

  • Being with the same person for a long time might get tedious.

  • Relying on other people can be risky, and no fun if they pull out of something.

  • It might be more difficult to meet other and interact, because you won’t feel like you have to do it so much.

Just remember that going travelling isn’t necessarily all about having a great time and seeing some spectacular sights after a boozy night in Bangkok. Bear in mind that your time away may be full of opportunities to learn important life skills and it could even improve your career prospects. Being independent, and showing that you’ve taken on responsibility during your trip could be taken into account by prospective employers, and you’ll probably feel more confident too.
